So if a person is going to make a slotted head for a steel string and use tuners such as Grover 18:1.The specs are .6875 plate thickness,which is thicker than a steel head.So is a person making a classical headstock thickness for steel string?I`ve got cumpiano`s book which has dimensions for classical.Also do I drill a 10 MM hole for those? Thanks James I`ve been posting a lot lately.I`m getting tired of being a walnut.Almost time for the big game. |

I make my slotheads 3/4" thick and drill according to whatever tuners are going to be used. |

My slot head National has a 13/16th headstock and having drilled my first classical head today, the tuner holes were 10mm. Yours will be smaller. I used a jig that had three holes drilled in it. If you made one out of hardwood it would probably be faster overall and you can be sure the spacing is right by putting your tuners into the jig. Make the jig the same thikness as your head and clamp it on with a couple of strips of wood. Works slick. Cheers, Danny |

And drill for the tuner posts before you cut the slots. Wish I could remember that. |

I make mine 3/4 - the Luthier tools slot head jig expects that to centre the tuner holes on the sides. BTW, that thing is priceless .. it makes slotheads dead easyt o do. I did make antoher jig to hold that jig vertical on the drill press though, to drill the tuner holes .. I did a test by hand and they came out a little rough, hard to control the pull of the drill bit. Works like a charm now though. Amd like Howard says, drill first , route last !!! |
